Itinerary 1 - The Heart of Le Marche Region
Sassoferrato, Gola della Rossa , Frasassi Caves, FabrianoStart off from the Country House in north-West direction towards Frontone- Serra S. Abbondio. You will find indications taking directing you to the city of Sassoferrato which is an approximate 20 km drive.
The Gola della Rossa park if the largest protected are of le Marche region. A journey across the Park is "a journey in the heart of the Marches" at the discovery of historical-artistic treasures concealed by landscapes rich in charm and harmony and surrounded by an uncontaminated and luxuriant nature. The large areas is full of woodlands, meadows and walls. This area is also ideal for hiking and there are numerous trails and itineraries to guide you throughout. At the doors of the city of Sassoferrato, to the south, you will find the Sentinum park which is know as the one of the most important archeological sites of le Marche. It is formed of two areas, divided by the main road which brings to the city of Fabriano. There are pedestrian walkways which guide from one area to the other and allow to visit both areas. A must see is the Rocca Albornoz ( Fortress Albornoz ) , a massive military construction which dates pack to the XIV century which represents the symbol of this city. Constructed in 1365 by orders of Cardinal Egidio Alborboz. It served as a very important defense fortress for Sassoferrato and the surrounding territories. From Sassoferrato , heading north east in direction of Frazione Osteria di Colleponi, after approx.. 8 km. you will find the Gola della Rossa Regional Park along with Frasassi. After visiting the park, you can not miss a visit to the Frasassi Caves , a unique wonder of le Marche. These are amongst the most famous caves in Italy and the most spectacular limestone caves in Europe. Over 15 kms of stalactites and stalagmites, lakes and alabaster offer an unforgettable show, attracted by the fairy tale landscape of the "Grotta grande del Vento" ( Great Caves of the Wind) where million of crystals conjure up enchanting images. Exit Pierosara heading South towards Fabriano which is less than 30 min drive. Fabriano is famous world wide for paper production as it was the first place in Europe where paper production began back in the XIII century. Visit the cities Museum of Paper and Watermark which is simply fascinating !
